It’s April again and that means it’s time for the A to Z challenge. For those of you who don’t know about this blog challenge (or blog challenges, in general), I will be creating posts every day in April except on Sundays, starting from the letter A and ending with Z. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it and not get super annoyed with the increase in posts. :p
This year, my theme for the A to Z Challenge is characters and narrators.
April 1 Post – A is for Anti-hero
There are typical heroes – strong, moral, and all-around pure goodness. We like them, we do. But let’s be honest, we love the anti-hero too – the flawed and reluctant character who may or may not have been naughty in the past.
Was our anti-hero tricked into or paid to be good? Is the anti-hero brooding, full of snark, or rough around the edges? Does the anti-hero have ulterior motives for this brief walk on the side of the angels? Does he/she sometimes go too far? You know it. 😉
Who are my favorite anti-heroes?
- Wolverine (I did tell you how much I love Wolverine, and by extension the name “Logan”)
- Sherlock (he IS a high functioning sociopath)
- Han Solo and Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly/Serenity (they are, at least initially motivated by money)
- Dean Winchester (you have to appreciate a man with a love of classic music who is often swathed in a leather jacket)
- Captain Jack Sparrow (the mascara and the pirate-ness put him firmly in the anti-hero status)
- Catwoman (she kind of can’t decide if she’s a villain or not, but in “Dark Knight Rises,” she becomes one of the few anti-heroines)
Ah the anti-heroes…my absolute favorite. They are wayyyyy better than boring regular heroes.
Good choice for the A to Z. Can’t wait for the next 25.

I am a fan of anti- heroes also. Not many from film or novels are coming to me right now, but several from television are popping into my head.
1. Nancy Botwin – Weeds
2. Walter White – Breaking Bad
3. Jesse Pinkman – BB
4. Nurse Jackie
5. Frank Underwood – House of Cards.
Dang, I sound disturbed when this many not so great people. I still love anti-heroes. I like your post and will be back for more

Vic Mackey from the TV show The Shield. He is a proper bad fella yet you can’t help rooting for him whenever he seems in trouble.

Oh I haven’t watched the show, but I’ve been meaning to…anti-hero-ness pushes me over the edge, so I’ll have to add it to my “to be watched” list. 🙂

The first couple of series are really intense, lots of twists and turns, it is well worth a watch, it’s so macho it does make me laugh.

Great choice! Anti-heroes are one of my favorite types of heroes. There’s so many great ones to choose from. I think the entire cast of Guardians of the Galaxy fits this archetype. That was a fun movie.

Thanks 🙂 And you’re so right – that movie was awesome, partially because of all the anti-heroes. 🙂
