quotable “you can’t go back…”

In keeping with the traditions of the NaNoWriMo season, I’ve a quote for you that can be applied to the herculean task of writing 50,000 words in one month… or, more generally – to life.  🙂

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” C.S. Lewis

There will always be things you can’t change – and the past ranks at the top of the list.  Perhaps somewhere near the bottom are changes to your novel, if you want to even ATTEMPT to finish the first draft in one month (I know – you can tell where my focus truly lies this month.  At least I’m not whining yet about how far behind I am on my word count and if I’ll ever be able to finish this thing)…

…either way, the advice is the same – make changes now and shape the path forward.  That’s all you can do.

And remember that very few things in our future are carved in stone – and even if you think they are, you can always get out a chisel… or a new rock. 😉

  1. This is why I can’t do Nano. Writing a novel is a lot like hanging out with someone. The more you’re around them the more you understand them. Every time I write a novel the story tells me where it wants to go. Usually around the 20,000 word mark. Because of that I have to slam on the breaks and do a little back tracking. Exhausting but worth it. For me anyway.

    • I have trouble with NaNo as well. I’m currently way behind (working later than usual certainly hasn’t helped much). But mostly, I think the pressure and the word count goals get to me. Also, I’m more of a pantser than a planner, and that really hurts you when you’re trying to cram 50,000 words in one month…

      • No. It’s more like I’m hyper aware of the word count. So a type a bunch, enter in the count and then frown because my progress isn’t enough, then type a bunch, etc. It makes the process feel like getting blood from a rock. Except the rock is my head… 😂
