let it be and the cancer playlist

Someone I love has cancer.

The night before we got the diagnosis, there was looming sense of dread.  Everything that I’d been pinning my hopes on had been ruled out.  Laying bed that night, I knew what the next day would bring.  A part of me wanted to google cancer or take a stroll into the vortex of WebMd.  But nothing I could find there would answer any question.  No article I could read would let me peer inside of someone else’s body.  I had to wait for doctors to diagnose and treat.

There would be a lot to do in the coming weeks.  But there was nothing I could do at that moment.  Nothing to do but wait.  And to be honest, through the process – there’s a lot of waiting.  Waiting for tests to be scheduled, waiting for results to be read, waiting to learn the next steps – just waiting.

And there is more than waiting too.  There’s keeping calm, staying positive, stopping your mind from spinning into unhelpful scenarios, and keeping your google searching in the realm of reasonable.

There’s breathing, there’s calm,  and there’s managing the problem.  Or there’s the opposite.

In times of trouble, people find solace in all kinds of things.  For me, it’s always been words – quotes, poetry, songs.  The night before the diagnosis, I scrolled through my playlists and looked for solace.

I found it in – Let it be, by the Beatles.  If I had a record player, I think I would have warn out the needle as I listened over and over to what came to be my favorite part of the song:

Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Later, I looked up what the song meant and somehow the simple song with a mantra-like refrain helped to soothe even more.  According to a few articles, the song was inspired by a dream Paul had about his mom (named Mary) during a stressful time in his life.  In the dream, she told him that everything would be alright and to let it be.

There are times when we need to know that things will be alright.  That night, and many since, that song has really helped me – so much that I think of it as my one-song cancer playlist.  And there’s good news too – the cancer is going to be removed soon with the miracle of robotic surgery.  So, everything really will be alright soon and that’s something to be so thankful for.

If you’re ever in a difficult spot, I hope that Let it be‘s lyrics and inspiration can help you find solace as well.

Let it be, by the Beatles

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
