It’s April again and that means it’s time for the A to Z challenge and this year, my theme for the A to Z Challenge is characters and narrators.
C is for Cad
A cad is a rake, an immoral man, mostly known for his womanizing ways. While these characters are to be avoided at all costs in real life, in romance novels they are generally a lot of fun…especially when they meet their match in a sassy and strong heroine.
My favorite cads:
- Sebastian from “The Devil In Winter” – believe me when I say he is the biggest cad and rake I’ve ever read, and I enjoyed every minute of it 😉
- Chase Gamble from “Tempting the Best Man” – he’s not really too much of a cad..but just enough 😉
C is also for Curmudgeon
A curmudgeon is usually a cantankerous old person. What I like about a lot of curmudgeon in books/movies/tv is the snark, extra points if they have a good back-story and are just waiting for a friend (like in Disney’s “UP.”)
My favorite curmudgeons:
- Mr. Wilson (Really, Denis WAS a menace. Could you really blame him for being annoyed when that kid kept showing up in his house and eating freshly baked goods.)
- Carl from “UP” (and dude, who didn’t cry during the first five minutes of that movie. Disney was somehow able to tell a better love story in a scant few minutes than some people’s attempt over 90 minutes.)
Ooo! Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino.

Hooray for Cads and Curmudgeons! Let’s see, my favorite Cad would have to be…Trent (Vince Vaughn) from Swingers, and my favorite Curmudgeon…Murtaugh (Danny Glover) from the Lethal Weapon series. The crotchety old men are some of my favorites character ever…because how many fucks do they give? None ;]

lol. Nice cad and curmudgeon! And you’re right, while cads may secretly care, curmudgeons give zero fucks

Loved Sebastian! He kinda reminds me of Jasper from Elizabeth Hoyt’s To Seduce a Sinner…ok, well Jasper was probably a bit more caddish.

I vote curmudgeons! 🙂 I’ve watched UP a thousand times. Mainly because I have little grand daughters that can’t be denied any request. So I watched UP with them sometimes ten times a day. I never got tired of it. I liked Carl. I want to grow up to be just like Carl. When the white coats come for me it’s going to be a balloon ride to Narnia or a secret garden. Where ever the girls want to go. I still lose it every time I see a squirrel.

lol. Nice I haven’t seen UP in forever, but it truly was a great movie and accessible to most age groups, I think. 🙂
